In plan, the configuration of the house is loosely based on the Nautilus, a
multi-celled sea creature whose shell is formed by numerous radiating
chambers. In this design, walls spiral out from the center of the house,
creating a dramatically cascading roof structure that serves to reflect the
interior volumes, as well as to reduce the massing of the overall structure.
A significant effort was made to extend the radiating walls beyond the
windows in order to link the indoor and outdoor spaces. Likewise, large
overhangs, overlapping walls, stucco and wood exterior finishes, metal
roofs and interior clerestory windows were incorporated into the home.
